Louis Stewart, the city of Sacramento’s high-profile chief innovation officer, has given notice, and will start working for Santa Clara-based technology company Nvidia Corp. in mid-September.

Stewart told the Business Journal he was recruited by Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) to help it develop a talent pipeline of software and hardware developers in the Black and Hispanic communities for its deep learning technology, as well as for efforts in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Nvidia develops hardware and software architecture for high-speed computing, graphics processing and databases.

Stewart started working for the city of Sacramento in 2017 and was named chief innovation officer with the city’s Office of Innovation and Economic Development the following year.

He has worked on city and regional initiatives for deployment of 5G wireless networks, smart cities technology and autonomous vehicles. Those are sectors that Nvidia is also developing, Stewart said.

“It’s a really good fit for me,” he said.

Stewart’s last day with the city will be Sept. 9.

In his new position, Stewart will work to recruit employees to Nividia from historically Black colleges and from Hispanic-serving universities.

Many technology companies say they want to diversify their technology employees, but Nvidia appears to be focused on actually making that happen, Stewart said. The company had a market capitalization of $324 billion, at Friday’s Nasdaq close.
