Sacramento Hires New Chief Innovation Officer

A former state economic development official has been chosen as Sacramento’s new chief innovation officer — a role that could help shape the city’s tech economy.

Louis Stewart began in his new position this week leading the Mayor’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which was started last year under Mayor Kevin Johnson to support local startups and ongoing efforts to build the region into a technology hub.

Prior to his new role, Stewart was deputy director of innovation and entrepreneurship with the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, a position he held for seven years, according to his LinkedIn page.

Stewart said in a statement he grew up in Sacramento and always wanted to give back in a “direct way.”

“There’s so much excitement around what’s possible in our city right now, from smart cities to urban tech and our vibrant entrepreneurship community,” Stewart said.
