The city of Sacramento is accepting applications for an economic development program where it will subsidize consulting research for companies willing to invest in their own growth.
Under the program, up to seven entrepreneurial companies will be selected to get up to 36 hours of consulting service for no charge from the National Center for Economic Gardening, based in Michigan.
Sacramento sees the program as a way to use city resources to boost promising companies, said Louis Stewart, chief innovation officer with the city. “We are interested in investing in the companies that are willing to invest in themselves.”
The Economic Gardening consultants include researchers who scour corporate databases, geographic database systems, search engine optimization trends and marketing tools to provide company owners with information and conclusions about their business, market and marketing.
The program is an inward look at economic development, rather than spending money on recruiting companies from outside the area to relocate here, said Carlos Eliason, a spokesman with the city. “The idea is to take what you have and make it better.”
As part of its commitment, Sacramento will pay for the $4,290 cost of the 36 hours of consulting work. If the company wishes to implement the findings of the consulting work, it can apply for up to a $50,000 grant, which will be matched 1-to-1 by the city, Stewart said.
