The city of Sacramento has engaged two Silicon Valley technology companies to map and model autonomous vehicle routes in the city.

Sacramento is working with Deepen AI Inc. of Santa Clara and Foresight AI Inc. of San Jose to speed the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles by developing three test routes in the city.

Local political and business leaders have been pursuing an effort for two years to make Sacramento a pioneer in the development of autonomous transportation technology and a national test bed for autonomous vehicle innovation.

Toward that end, the city will use Deepen AI’s 2D and 3D annotation technology and Foresight AI’s high-definition map-building system to create detailed feature maps to speed the implementation of driverless vehicles.

“Sacramento is committed to bringing our residents more shared, clean ways to get around,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg in a news release. “This partnership builds on our momentum toward becoming a center of innovation in new transportation technologies.”

The three-month project will start in February and build high-definition, 3D maps for three demonstration routes in the city, including a downtown loop on J and L streets, a loop on Franklin Boulevard in Curtis Park and a loop near California State University Sacramento. City officials hope to share the routes with carmakers to entice them to test autonomous vehicles in Sacramento.
